We search for optimal target conditions for electron acceleration followed by gamma-ray production. We report on experimental and numerical data on relativistic laser plasma interaction with plasma having different density gradients and compositions. Experiments were made at intensities of 3000-5000 PW/cm2 with 50 fs high contrast laser pulses. Plasma scalelength control was achieved using artificial nanosecond pre-pulse. Prominent increase in gamma-yield was observed for optimally designed plasma plumes as compared to the flat surface case. The hugest increase was obtained with specially designed sandwich-like structures irradiated by optimized nanosecond pre-pulse. Numerical simulations with the PIC code Mandor revealed mechanisms responsible for the observed processes.
