“Soil” and “land” are terms often used interchangeably in development-environment discourses. Our objective is to highlight the functions of soil as component of the land’s natural capital, which supports all terrestrial biodiversity engaged in delivering the land’s ecosystem services that support human wellbeing. We therefore wish to discuss Land VERSUS Soil issues in the context of the proposed SDG n°15 to be integrated into the UN development agenda beyond 2015. Contributors to this session are scientists concerned with the sustainable use and management of soils and lands, with a particular focus DLDD issues, and land and soil conservation. Their studies address knowledge requested by international and intergovernmental bodies such as the UNCCD and the GSP. This session aims to address the “land degradation neutrality” concept in drylands from a scientific and interdisciplinary perspective and to identify practical cases in which LDN can be achieved.
