The study presents phylogenetic analysis of 27 species of the genus Atraphaxis and 5 shrubby species of Polygonum using ITS 1-2 nrDNA and trnL-F cpDNA sequence data. Maximum likelyhood (ML) analysis was performed for 139 ITS 1-2 nrDNA sequences and 90 trnL-F cpDNA sequences of Atraphaxis, and the members of outgroup including Fallopia, Reynoutria, Muehlenbeckia, Duma, Polygonum, and Polygonella.A group of A. ovczinnikovii (Chukav.) O.V. Yurtseva and Bactria lazkovii O.V.Yurtseva sp. nov. takes sister position to the rest species of the clade Atraphaxis, differs in sporoderm surface and might be recognized as a genus Bactria O.V. Yurtseva gen. nov. Chloroplast phylogeny greatly coincides with taxonomy of Lovelius (1979), but several new sections and series are suggested for a describtion. Some spacies occupying incongruent positions in chloroplast and ITS trees are treated as hybrids. Several new species are suggested for a describion.
