Introduction: We investigated the effect of resistance exercise intensity and exercise-induced metabolic stress on the activation of anabolic signalling and on the expression of myogenic regulatory genes in skeletal muscle. Methods: Strength-trained athletes performed a high-intensity [74% of 1 repetition maximum (RM)] resistance exercise (HI), a middle-intensity (54% of 1RM) exercise (MI), or a middle-intensity (54% of 1RM) exercise with blood flow restriction (MIR). Results: The lactate concentration in the MI was approximately 2-fold lower than in the two other sessions and in the MIR lactate concentration was highest. The phosphorylation level of extracellular kinase 1/2Thr202/Tyr204 after exercise was correlated with metabolic stress. Metabolic stress induced a decrease in myostatin mRNA expression, whereas the mechano-growth factor mRNA level depended on the exercise intensity and not on metabolic perturbations. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that both intensity and exercise-induced metabolic stress can be manipulated to affect responses of muscle anabolic signalling. [ DOI ]
