Аннотация:Miniaturization is a major trend of insect evolution. At least nine insect orders include microinsect species (less than 2 mm long). Representatives of many lineages have independently evolved into microinsects, the ecology of which is quite diverse. Some of them are strongly modified, and some are rather similar morphologically to much larger related species. Paradoxically, while smaller animals tend to be r-strategists, extremely small insects tend to be K-strategists, because of limitations to the minimum size of a viable egg. The minimum size of a nervous system providing for their relatively complex behaviours probably also limits the minimum body size of insects. In extreme cases, insect miniaturization leads to the loss of some organs and functions, but the vast majority of microinsects retain all such functions. Further studies of the ecomorphology of microinsects should include more species and a broader array of methods. Microinsects can serve as useful models for ecomorphology.
