Abstract
This note is devoted to ‘arbitrary choice’, a rather mysterious mathematical operation which is performed by the human consciousness (or in Jean Piaget’s apt words, by the act of personal activity of the subject solving the problem). The formalized mathematics never managed to get rid of a need for understanding which accompanies arbitrary choice. There is an implicit presence of need for understanding in formalized mathematics revealing itself as soon as we try to apply the formalized theory to something. The visual example of use of an arbitrary choice is shown in the article.
