Аннотация:Spectral analysis has been performed for the zonal-circulation index and the geopotentials at several levels in the lower stratosphere (beginning with 10 mb) and the troposphere to follow the spectrum evolution and to eliminate the trend associated with the annual course. For 1970-74 there were significant maxima in the spectral density in the winter seasons of 1971-72, 1972-73, and 1973-74 for periods of 27 days. Detailed analyses have been performed on the structure of the oscillations within this period for one of the intervals by the identification of traveling waves, which indicate that the 27-day oscillations are related to a planetary wave traveling to the west with the longitude wave number s equals and n equals 5. The actual structure of the wave is compared with the structure given by a model for resonant excitation of planetary waves. It is concluded that the resonance mechanism applies.
