Their purpose is put forward the conservation of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere. It is assumed its constancy in the history of the Earth. Now the accumulation of huge amounts of biomass is prevented by recurring fires from time to time. But these are only possible if there is a certain amount of oxygen in the atmosphere. By burying gigantic amounts of living matter, the Earth has been transformed for the benefit and upliftment of humans. Catastrophes in the Earth's history have served as a kind of guarantee for the preservation of life. The activity of the Earth's interior is just as important for life as that of the Sun, and yet the tectonic activity of the Earth's crust must not be too great either. The present distribution of land and ocean seems also to be close to constant. Great thinkers of the past have written about the original purpose of the Earth as the home of man and created a teleological picture of the world. Karl Ritter regarded earth science not only as a physical science, but also as a historical science, The introduction of the teleological principle into cognition makes it possible to explain a gigantic volume of facts. And this is most necessary in history, where no event is left without a purpose, concluded the great Gogol. Keywords: catastrophes, oxygen, biosphere, tectonic activity, earth's crust, teleology
