Аннотация:The abilities of methods of statistical analysis are demonstrated based on the example of the studyof present-day bottom sediments of the western part of the Barents Sea. As a result of cluster and dispersive analyses, the principles of distribution of granulometric types of the present-day bottom sediments and concentrations of organic carbon in them have been identified along the depth within the sublittoral and bathyal sea zones. It is concluded on the basis of our results that the granulometric distribution of sediments is caused by mechanical differentiation of sedimentary material via its transportation by marine currents, as well as the distance from the main provenances: Novaya Zemlya, Kola Peninsula, and Spitsbergen. The accumulation of organic carbon in bottom sediments was related to the peculiarities of the distribution of communities of marine organisms within these facies zones. The high content of organic carbon in the bathyal zone of the sea was related to the increase in primary productivity, as well as the transportation of marine currents of accumulated biogenic material in the littoral and sublittoral zones toward the bathyal zone. Keywords: bottom sediments of the Barents Sea, facies of the Barents Sea, dispersive analysis, cluster analysis, granulometric types of sediments, western part of the Barents Sea
