It was found that general verbal memory capacity depended not only of the operational verbal block but also of activation (r=0.56; p<0.05) and executive components (r=0.63; p<0.05). Activation and verbal blocks were related to the same hippocampus structures – to the volume of right and left hippocampus heads. The asymmetry of the left hippocampus to the right one considering activation component is highly correlated with good results on tests of the verbal operational blocks. Subjects with this hippocampus pattern show better productivity, effectiveness and longer immediate recall span. Same results were obtained when right and left hippocampus superficial layers and neuropsychological data were compared. Besides greater volume of the right head as compared with the left one tends to be more associated with better executive functioning (r=-0.51; p<0.05 for discrepancy scores in working memory test – Forward–Backward Span). Summary: 1) Efficiency of verbal memory retention depends not only on verbal memory capacity but also on activation level that are related to the anterior parts of right and left hippocampus. 2) Lateral asymmetry for the hippocampus was revealed: the right head of hippocampus is more involved in executive functions and regulation during verbal memory recall. 3) The cauda of the left hippocampus tends to be closely related to the verbal memory capacity.
