The paper traces the development of monastic historiography of Upper Myanmar, a key historical and cultural region of Myanmar, from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries. The survey of extant and provisionally reconstructed sources reveals three principal types of texts that make up the historiographic tradition, namely, the genealogies of monastic communities, the chronicles of the Buddhas teaching, and monastic biographies. The development of these genres is related to changes in the organization of the sangha. The paper also discusses common characteristics of Burmese monastic historiography and its relationship to Theravada history-writing received from Sri Lanka.
