Аннотация:The degree of divergence of histone genes of some invertebrate species (echinoderms, mollusk and polychaeta) has been determined by means of DNA-RNA hybridizayion. The total histone [3H]-labelled mRNA of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius was used in these studies. Up to 3,9% of nucleotides substitution has been found in the Strongylocentrotus genus. For distantly related species of sea urchins 13% substitutions have been found. This value was not exceeded in hybridization experiments on DNA species from different classes and phyla of invertebrates and may reflect the degree of divergence of the most conservative histone genes (H4 and presumably H3). The rate of divergence of histone genes has been compared to the averadge mutation frequency in eukaryotes and to the theoretically predicted values based on the degree of the genetic code degeneracy. The results obtained suggest that not all synonymous mutations are realized in histone genes.
