Аннотация:The analysis of vegetation structure of mountain steppes in the Mongolian Altai was carried out within the project “Mongolian Ecosystem Monitoring” with the support of the Joint Russian-Mongolian Complex Biological Expedition of the Russian and the Mongolian Academies of Sciences. The diversity of steppe vegetation is reflected in the structure of the altitudinal zonation of the Mongolian Altai. Central Mongolian-Altai type of altitudinal zonation is characteristic of the highest parts of the Mongolian Altai with their natural differentiation into high-altitude belts. The current coenotic diversity of Mongolian Altai steppes is presented on a medium-scale (1: 1 000 000) map. Different types of vegetation units are displayed on the map. Phytocatenas with a certain proportion and arrangement of plant communities are used as the basic structural units of vegetation on mountain slopes. Combinations of phytocatenas on the slopes of different aspects (expositional combinations) are characteristic of areas with different composition of rocks within an altitudinal vegetation belt. The results of this chapter are expected to help in solving the current problems associated with rapid human-induced transformation of the steppe regions of Mongolia: population growth, changing social and political processes, and introduction of new ways to use land and natural resources.
