Аннотация:To foresee a plausible electromagnetic “contamination” of thenear-Earth space by anthropogenic activity, a magnitude ofelectromagnetic response in the upper ionosphere to 50/60 Hz powerline emission (PLE) is to be modeled. For that we have calculatedthe spatial structure of electromagnetic disturbance in themid-latitude atmosphere and ionosphere immersed into an inclinedgeomagnetic field ${\bf B}_0$. The electromagnetic field isexcited by a large-scale 50/150 Hz oscillating linear currentsuspended above the ground. The elaborated model is based onnumerical solution of full-wave equations in a realisticionosphere whose parameters have been reconstructed with the useof the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model. The PLEwave beam in the ionosphere is not guided by ${\bf B}_0$, butstill is shifted equatorward from the vertical. The responseof the nightside upper ionosphere is slowly decreasing with diminishing oflatitude. The amplitude of PLE electric component in the upperionosphere generated by the unbalanced power line current withintensity of $\sim$10~Amperes can reach $\sim$1~$\mu$V/m which issufficient to be detected by a low-Earth-orbit satellite. For abetter insight into PLE transmission through the ionosphere abasic information about ELF waves in the multi-ion plasma isprovided.
