Аннотация:A physical mechanism for the explanation of the emergence of ULF electromagnetic earthquake precursors have been proposed. It is based on the effect arising from the geomagnetic field perturbations excited by microcracking and crack-generated dilatancy in the conductive Earth layers. It has been shown that ULF electromagnetic forerunner results from the microcrack-generated acoustic waves. It is essential that at far distances the components of the electromagnetic micro-fields of all the cracks are of the same sign regardless of their spatial orientation. Summing up all the fields results in the effect which could be considered as a collective magnetic forerunner. According to estimates, the coherent part of the resulting magnetic and electric fields may reach the values of 1-10 nT and 1-10 micro
Volts per meter, respectively. Thereby, the cracks which are incoherent acoustic sources, may be coherent sources of ULF electromagnetic activity and is often observed in the absence of seismic activity.
