Аннотация:A prominent feature of Old Icelandic Sagas is that the narrative matter is not quite new. Moreover, a Saga is reliable iff it refers to events relevant for the audience and accepted as true by the whole community. The goal of the present paper is to provide evidence that proper names must be regarded as references to the background knowledge of the audience.
I prove that proper names in the saga mentality were arranged as a data base, each type of personal designations having their characteristic text - building profile.
