Аннотация:The paper analyzes the effect of rotational nonuniformity on the non-Jeans stability of an infinitely long and infinitely wide cylinder in which the unperturbed values of density and velocity dispersion are slowly decreasing functions of the radial coordinate, approaching zero as the radius approaches infinity. Four cases are examined: a cold cylinder, a hot homogeneous cylinder subjected to an axisymmetric disturbance, a hot cylinder subjected to a nonaxisymmetric disturbance, and the general case. It is shown that the cold cylinder will experience a Rayleigh instability as a result of rotational nonuniformity, an axisymmetric disturbance will produce an aperiodic instability, and a nonaxisymmetric disturbance will produce an oscillatory instability. Application of the results to the Galaxy suggests that galactic rotation is not laminar and that turbulence may be generated in extensive areas of the Galaxy.
