Аннотация:A new modified circulation index, the velocity circulation of zonal wind, is proposed. It is shown that the circulation index reflects large-scale features of zonal atmospheric circulation and characterizes atmospheric currents in various latitude belts. The lag correlation between the velocity circulation along various latitudes at standard pressure levels and sea surface temperature (SST) in the equatorial Pacific (NINO 3.4 region) has been calculated. Significant correlations between these characteristics are found. It is shown that global atmospheric circulation can have a pronounced effect on the formation of SST anomalies in the tropics, and in turn the response of the atmosphere to ocean anomalies exists and tends to propagate from the tropics to midlatitudes. The relationships between velocity circulation and air temperature anomalies at different latitudes have been considered as well. Based on these results it is shown that the velocity circulation can have a significant effect on the formation of air temperature anomalies, while air temperature has a very slight effect on the velocity circulation.
