Approximately 1400 stars in the spiral arm S4 of Andromeda were measured on a plate obtained with the 2-m RC telescope of the Bulgarian National Observatory. A pronounced gradient of star luminosity and density was found in the central part of S4; here, the stars become fainter at about 2m and their surface density decreases tenfold at a distance of approximately 1 kpc from the inner edge of the arm. The decline of maximum star brightness from this edge is interpreted as an age gradient; the velocity of star formation propagation across the arm was determined as approximately 60 km/s. If Andromeda has trailing spiral arms and the pitch angle of S4 is approximately 25 deg in its central part, the pattern velocity is approximately 7-14 km/s kpc.
