[1] Ambient temperature in spring influences the phenotypic structure of pied flycatcher populations ficedula hypoleuca / E. V. Ivankina, T. A. Ilyina, V. G. Grinkov et al. // Proceedings Hole-breeding Passerines Meeting (Białowieża, Poland 7-12 September 2007). — Poland, 2007. — P. 15–15. We studied phenotypic population structure of Pied Flycatcher in Western Siberian (2001-2006) and Central (1992-2005) region of Russia to estimate the responsiveness of birds population to environmental changes e.g. ambient temperatures. Exposure to low temperatures was showed recently to lead to a short-term increase in basal metabolic rate (BMR) in pale (PM) but not conspicuous males (CM). The BMR increase in PM occurs at the expenses of the productive energy: (1) in Moscow Region, advertising behavior was found to reduce in PM in cold weather, whereas CM performed full-scale advertising behavior within a wide range of temperatures; (2) in Western Siberia, intensity of advertising behavior in PM in captivity was revealed to be lower at low ambient temperatures. As a consequence, females in aviary tests prefer CM at low temperature. In Western Siberia, the proportion of CM in the breeding population was higher in years with lower mean ambient temperature in spring. In Moscow Region, spring temperature does not influence the phenotypic structure of the breeding population, but warmer ambient temperature in the end of April favoured the increase of proportion of young PM participating in mate attraction. Different degree of changes of phenotypic structure in relation to spring temperatures in studied populations is discussed.
