Аннотация:This paper examines the structure and case marking in various types of nominalizations in Russian. It is argued that while “result nominals” have a struc¬ture similar to that of non-derived nominals, eventive nominalizations may include several verbal functional projections, particularly vP and AspP, yet the amount of nominal functional projections involved in nominalization-specific morphosyntax is minimal. While both “result nominals” and eventive nominalizations have internal arguments in the genitive, it is proposed that the nature of the genitive in the two types of nominalizations is different. Furthermore, case marking in eventive nomi¬nalizations, especially the nature of the instrumental marking on the external argu¬ment, is considered in light of two competing case theories, Woolford’s Inherent Case Theory and Marantzian Dependent Case Theory, and it is argued that the former is superior to the latter in accounting for the Russian facts.
