Аннотация:During the early development of Dynamena pumila L., a hydroid polyp, the formation of the epithelial sheet involving both surface and inner cells is a major morphogenetic event. Epithelization of the surface cells begins at the border zone (the zone of maximal curvature) of the discoid morula. It is associated with the apical-basal elongation of cells, an increase in positive curvature, and the contraction and rounding of the external surface of the embryo. The mechanism of epithelization was reconstructed from morphometric data using the technique of the major components. A relationship between apico-basal elongation and the contraction of the basal cell surface was found. This automatically results in the bending of the cellular sheet with the basal side inside, and segregation of the surface cells from the inner ones. We obtained experimental data, which allowed us to distinguish between two independent processes in the anteroposterior polarization of the planula: axialization (determination of the major axis of the body of the planula) and polarization per se, i.e., determination of the poles of this axis.
