The method of dispersion of optical rotation has been used to study the interaction of polyl-lysine hydrochloride and polyacrylic acid in a mixture of water and ethanol (60:40) over a wide pH range. It has been established that interaction of the polyelectrolytes has a significant influence on the conformation of polypeptide in solution. The conformational transition helix-coil in water-alcohol solutions of the complex PL-PAA shifs by 4·5 pH units as compared with poly-l-lysine in the same solvent. The method of electron microscopy has established the globular structure of the complex PL-PAA. It has been shown that the reaction PL-HCl + + PAA = PL-PAA + HCl relates to exchange reactions and is accompanied by the release of hydrochloric acid which weak polyacrylic acid ousts from the polymer salts of PL-HCl. Such reactions do not occur in low-molecular weight compounds; in this case formation of the complex PL-PAA is most probably due to the cooperativeness of interactions of macromolecule-macromolecule. © 1971.
