A study has been made of the mechanical properties of membranes of poly-electrolyte complexes based on polyacrylic acid and polyethelenepiperazine under uniaxial tension in aqueous and aqueous-organic media at different temperatures. It has been shown that the mechanical properties of such materials are determined to a considerable extent by the nature of the medium in which the deformation is carried out, as well as by the proportions of the components in the polyelectrolyte complex. The permeability of the membranes of various compositions have been studied in water and urea. A correlation is found between the mechanical ultrafiltration and dialysis properties of the membranes investigated. Suggestions concerning the structure of such materials are put forward on the basis of the experimental data. © 1976.
