A study was made of polyelectrolyte complexes formed by the interaction between high molecular weight poly-N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and polyphosphates and polyacrylates. It was shown that the degree of transformation in the reaction between polyelectrolytes is the most important parameter determining solubility, composition, structure and properties of polyelectrolyte complexes. A model was proposed for the polycomplex particle, which incorporates two-fibre hydrophobic units-sequences of pairs of units of complementary macromolecules forming salt bonds with each other, alternating with hydrophilic units that have been formed of single-fibre sequences of separate units of both polyelectrolyte. The model examined presumes the effect of the chemical nature of a poly-anion counter-ion on properties of polycomplexes, particularly on their solubility in dilute media. © 1982.
