The authors investigate the structure of particles of polyelectrolyte complexes formed by the sol of polysilicic acid with the linear synthetic polyaction poly-N,N′-dimethylamino-ethyl methacrylate. Using spin-labels covalently bound to positively charged polycationic units they show that in insoluble polycation-sol complexes ∼70-75% of the units of the polycation are adsorbed on the surface of the sol particles. Unlike insoluble polyelectrolyte complexes, in soluble polycomplexes the bulk of the polycationic units (∼ 70%) is loops. Titration of the soluble polycomplexes by the polysilici acid sol results in change in the composition and fall in the solubility of the polyelectrolyte complexes. The nature of the solubility of the polycomplexes and the relationship between their solubility and the conformation of the chain of the adsorbed polycation are postulated. © 1985.
