Ontological analysis has grown beyond philosophy to information technologies which nowadays have several clear applications to the biological sciences in particular. Ontologies are prominent facilitators in navigation across huge amounts of data in transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Construction of bio-ontologies is an ongoing research enterprise, with a diversity of approaches being used. The key feature of an ontology is that it represents a computer interpretable model of a particular subject area and allow biologists to formalize their knowledge about the complex biological processes. This article outlines the importance of ontologies for data integration in Plant Biology in particular. The advantage of contemporary plant ontologies to study Plant Growth and Development was tested.
