Аннотация:High end applications of optical coatings require the most complicated thin film coatings with limit spectral characteristics and high numbers of coating layers. The invention of the needle optimization technique made possible designing of optical coatings of all types with superior spectral properties. The modern trend in optical coating design is the development of specialized design techniques aimed at taking into account additional practical demands connected with the production of such types of coatings as chirped mirrors, WDM filters, coatings for displays and solar-cell applications, etc. Advances in deposition technology open new horizons for the production of coatings with many dozens and hundreds of coating layers. To explore a great potential of modern deposition technology, accurate monitoring of thickness of coating layers is extremely important. In this area new opportunities are connected with wide application of various optical monitoring techniques and further understanding of specific features of these techniques, in particular, such features as error self-compensation mechanism connected with broad band monitoring of coating production. One more trend in thin film optics is the study of the thin film growth process on the molecular level. The study allows one to understand the origin of thin film riughness and porosity, of stresses and imperfections in deposited films, etc. Combining recent advances in deposition technology, new knowledge of physical processes of thin film growth, new understanding about the correlation between design methods and monitoring techniques, it is now possible not only to design but also to produce coatings with superior properties.
