Аннотация:The capability of phase separation of water-salt solutions of nonstoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes (NPECs), when attains a critical value, was analyzed. Experiments were performed with NPECs composed of host poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) anions and guest poly(N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridium) (PEP) cations having different degrees of polymerization (DP). The observed decrease in the stability of the complexes was explained within the framework of the mechanism proposed for phase separation in water salt solutions. Results show that, when oligomers are used as guest polycations, the stability of soluble NPECs may be substantially decreased by reducing the degree of polymerization of the oligomers.
