Аннотация:The results of an investigation of the temperature and magnetic field dependencies of the Young’s modulus E and the internal friction Q-1 in the temperature region 4.2-350 K and the magnetic field up to 14 kOe for a single crystal (c axis) and polycrystalline samples of gadolinium are presented. The experiments were carried out by the flexural vibrating-reed method at frequencies ∼1 kHz. Anomalies in temperature dependencies of the Young’s modulus for single crystal and polycrystalline gadolinium in regions of the paramagnetism-ferromagnetism phase transition and spin-reorientation (SR) transition are accompanied by an abrupt increase of the internal friction. In the SR transition range a considerable temperature hysteresis of the internal friction has been observed. This hysteresis is connected with the coexistence of phases having different magnetic ordering. The ΔE effect has been studied in detail.
