Biogeographic Issues of the Great Eurasian Natural Tract: Actual Data on Transformation, Fragmentation, and Trends in Biota Dynamics Sobolev N.A., Tishkov A.A., Belonovskaya E.A., Vaisfeld M.A., Glazov P.M., Krenke A.N. Jr, Kobyakov K.N., Koltsov D.B., Lappo E.G., Morozova O.V., Tertitski G.M., Titova S.V., Tsarevskaya N.G. Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences Moscow, sobolev_nikolas@igras.ru, tishkov@igras.ru Authors studied the Great Eurasian Natural Tract (Backbone) (GEANT) between Fenno-Scandia and Pacific Ocean using remote sensing, field verification, and cartographic analysis, as well as applying on the data from scientific literature. They have updated southern borders of GEANT and showed the presence of steppe patches within the GEANT. During the last 20 years the biological productivity has increased in the tundra and forest-tundra belts. The border between tundra and taiga has shifted to the north. By contrary, the biological productivity has decreased in several plots of taiga zone affected by clear cuttings. “Kola” federal autobahn and Murmansk railway make real obstacle for moving Rangifer tarandus. Ursus arctos and Lynx lynx widespread their areas of distribution to the north. By contrary, Alopex lagopus restricted his area of distribution by moving from the south. Different Charadrii species show various trends in population dynamics and the size of distribution area. Anser albifrons changed his migration route because of abandonment of agricultural fields in the Russian plain. The article lists he most dangerous invasive plant species within GEANT. Valdayskiy National Park connects GEANT ecosystems and users of the related ecosystem services. The authors use the term environmental terminal to refer to small natural or green areas, environmentally subsidized but important as an ecosystem services provider. Transcontinental corridors of green infrastructure should connect the GEANT and the territories in Central and Western Europe. The creation of green infrastructure and other measures to organize the optimal use of ecological biosystems for providing a favorable environment is stated as a separate discipline - ecological bionics.
