In this paper, the active heating of a cylindrical body is considered. A corresponding test rig consists of a single cylinder heated from both ends by Peltier elements. The body has a free contact with the ambient air over its lateral surface. A mathematical model for this experimental setup is created. The heat transfer coefficient in the model is estimated both theoretically and experimentally. Here, the analytical and experimental values are in good agreement. The modeling of an active heating for the aluminum and glass materials is performed by using the finite element method (FEM). The influence of the position-dependent local heat transfer coefficient is investigated for vertical and horizontal alignments of the cylinder. The results show that the change in the heat transfer coefficient over the lateral surface should be taken into account in the case of a small heat conductivity to make feedforward control strategies as accurate as possible.
