Аннотация:High-Q optical whispering-gallery modes (WGM) of higher order $TE(TM)_lmq$ in spherical dielectric microresonators are shown to be equivalent to precessing circular modes $TE(TM)_llq$, with the rate of precession (function of $m$) depending on the value of residual resonator nonsphericity. This approach allows to explicitly derive characteristic two-lobe emission patterns of these modes in real spheroid resonators with prism couplers and thereby substantiate “spatial” recognition and optimal coupling to selected modes, which is of interest for different applications. Experimental results on selective excitation and emission of different modes with prism coupler are presented. Feasibility of single-prism transient filter and optical delay line based on precessing WGMs is discussed.
