Аннотация:Deep basins on continental crust can be divided into two main types: basins with normal faults and the basement both tilted in the same direction (S-type) and in opposite directions (A-type). A high intensity of stretching occurs in the basins of the A-type under a large angle of block tilting. This can also be typical of the S-type basins of a very small width L that does not exceed the thickness of the prestretched crust hc0 (L < hc0). Only in basins of these two k is extension sufficient to explain the subsidence by stretching. They can be called “rifts”. Extended basins in the Basin and Range Province are a typical example. Deep basins of A-type with a small angle of block tilting and deep basins of S-type with a width L >hc0 cannot be produced by stretching. Under a width hc0 < L ≲ 100 km they can be call “grabens”. The Fen-Wei Graben in Central China and the Viking Graben in the North Sea belong to this structural type.
