Single-celled cyanobacteria (picocyanobacteria, PC, cell size less than 3 μm) are an essential component of phytoplankton in the World Ocean, but the abundance of PC in the Arctic ecosystems is currently low. Changes in abiotic factors in the Arctic under the influence of the climate trend, such as an increase of the temperature of the surface layer, an increase of river runoff and the volume of warmer and saltier North Atlantic waters entering the Arctic, increased stratification, etc., lead to an increase in the role of picoforms (organisms with cell sizes less than 3 µm) in primary production, and an increase the smallest photoautotrophs contribution to the total phytoplankton biomass. It has been suggested that the contribution of the PC to the total abundance of picophytoplankton in Arctic waters may increase due to climate warming. Changes in the size structure and composition of the primary producers will affect the functioning of all subsequent trophic levels, and may lead to a large-scale restructuring of the entire Arctic system. The main task of the Project is to reveal the taxonomic composition and abundance of PC in the pelagial of the arctic Kara Sea and subarctic White Sea, and to study the spatial variability of these parameters and their dependence on basic abiotic factors driving productivity of the studied seas. The solution to the main task of the Project provides for: (1) Identification of the PC taxonomic composition in the Kara and White seas based on DNA methods; assessment of the PC community’s similarity of both seas and in water masses of different genesis within every sea. Forecast of possible changes in the taxonomic composition of the Arctic РС under the climate change, based on a comparison of the PC composition of the Arctic and Subarctic seas. (2) The assessment of the abundance and biomass (absolute and relative values) of plankton PC in the Arctic and Subarctic Sea. (3) To reveal the dependence of biomass and taxonomic composition of PC on hydrophysical and hydrochemical conditions. (4) Forecast of possible changes in the PC contribution to composition of picophytoplankton communities under the climate change based on a comparison of the PC abundance in the Arctic and Subarctic Sea. The novelty of the task is determined by the almost complete absence of data on the genetic diversity of PC in the plankton of the northern Russian seas. Expected results - obtaining a versatile characteristic of the PC communities in plankton of the Arctic Kara and subarctic White Seas. For the first time, the genetic composition of the PC will be revealed, and the spatial variability of the taxonomic structure of the PC communities will be characterized. Estimates of PC abundance of and their role in picoplankton communities will be obtained. Based on the identified parameters, a forecast of possible changes in the composition of the primary producers of the pelagial of the studied seas under the observed climatic trend will be given. In general, the planned Project is aimed at solving the topical fundamental problem of hydrobiology and bio-oceanology, lies in the mainstream of modern research aimed at identifying the dynamics of the structure and functioning of ecosystems in the Arctic under the current climatic trend. It should be noted that the solution to the fundamental scientific problems on which this Project is oriented is provided for by the " Strategy of development of the Russian Federation Arctic zone, and providing national security on the period until 2035” signed by the President of the Russian Federation on October 26, 2020. № 645.
