NOVELTY - Biosensor for detecting presence of an organophosphorus or carbamate compound comprises an enzymatic reaction system comprising at least one enzyme and a substrate for the enzyme. The organophosphorus or carbamate compound inhibits the enzyme. The enzymatic reaction system comprises at least butyrylcholinesterase. The enzymatic reaction system comprises butyrylcholinesterase and butyrylthiocholine as substrate, or butyrylcholinesterase and choline oxidase, and butyrylcholine as substrate. USE - The biosensor is useful for detecting the presence of an organophosphorus or carbamate compound. The organophosphorus or carbamate compound is a pesticide. The organophosphorus compound is chosen from diazinon, chlorpyrifos, dicrotophos, methamidophos, mevinphos, fenitrothion dichlorvos, fenthion and demeton. The carbamate compound is chosen from carbaryl and carbofuran (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The bio sensor detects the presence of organophosphorus or carbamate compound with high selectivity and sensitivity in a simple and reliable manner. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Biosensor for detecting presence of an organophosphorus or carbamate compound comprises an enzymatic reaction system comprising at least one enzyme and a substrate for the enzyme. The organophosphorus or carbamate compound inhibits the enzyme. The enzymatic reaction system comprises at least butyrylcholinesterase, which is prepared from a solution having a concentration of 1E-10 - 9E-7 M in a microgel formed from a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-(3(N,N-dimethylamino)propylmethacrylamide) copolymer is immobilized. The enzymatic reaction system comprises butyrylcholinesterase and butyrylthiocholine as substrate in a concentration of 1E-7 - 10 mM, or butyrylcholinesterase and choline oxidase, and butyrylcholine as substrate in a concentration of 1E-5 - 10 mM. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) method for detecting the presence of an organophosphorus or carbamate compound in a sample; and (2) use of a microgel formed from a poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-(3-(N,N-dimethylamino)propylmethacrylamide) copolymer in which butyrylcholinesterase is immobilized to produce a biosensor.
