Описание:The course "Traditional Religions in Contemporary Societies of South Asia" is intended for the MA programme “Religious Landscape of Asia” of the Faculty of Philosophy, Lomonosov Moscow State University .
The course focusses on the history and present condition of the traditional religions in South Asia in their variety. It shows both unity and diversity in their development which is responsible for the formation of religious syncretism, on one side, and contravention between religio-philosophical schools and trends as well as rigid conflicts between their adepts, on the other.
The course is concentrated on main traditional religions of South Asia such as Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism, Sikhism, born by the land of Hindustan. The course includes also the role of Islam, historically enforced into South Asian societies, but during centuries being adapted to the realities of the region gaining many features of traditional Indian religious beliefs and socio-cultural basis.
The course describes South Asia as a historical centre of Buddhism, which obtained a status of a world religion, reveals the main schools of Buddhism (Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana) with their features, characteristic for Indian subcontinent tradition. An important place is given to Hinduism and its main trends (Shivaism and Vishnuism) as a religion of the majority of Indians.
The course traces the difference between the so-called “high tradition” in religio-philosophical issues and popular culture discourse, focuses on syncretic cults in Indian religious life.
The course shows the ideological continuity, the links between past and present, the role of the above mentioned religions in contemporary social, political and cultural climate of the region.
Modern conceptions in religious studies on South Asia are under careful consideration. Most prominent place is given to the analysis of the religious symbols and religious rhetoric in public policy of South Asian states, as well as to the problem of religious and cultural heritage in the countries of the region.
