Описание:The Ancient Maya developed one of the most remarkable writing systems in the world and one of the few indigenous scripts in the Western Hemisphere, extending for nearly two millennia. Recently, the information inscribed in Maya hieroglyphic texts has fundamentally changed our understanding of this ancient Mesoamerican culture. To be able to read what the Maya wrote themselves about their affairs is an intriguing intellectual endeavor and a captivating window into a past culture – with repercussions into present-day realities in the Maya communities of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras.
Topics during the workshop included deciphering selected Classic Maya inscriptions, looking at the origins of the Maya script, as well as the language of the hieroglyphs, grammar of Classic Mayan, sign typology, typical structure and content of different types of texts (monumental inscriptions, texts in portable artefacts, codices, etc.), mathematics and the workings of the calendar, as well as the history of cracking the code of the Maya script.
The workshop consists of presentations complemented by group work with selected hands-on exercises by the participants. No previous knowledge of the Ancient Maya culture or the script is required to attend the workshop. The course was conducted in English.
