Even considered as rigid bodies, neutron stars are capable of dynamical evolution much more complex than simple spin-down. One might describe it as happening in five dimensions: spin rate, rotational axis orientation in space, and its orientation with respect to the crust, which is in general deformed and magnetized. Here, we consider the ways this multi-dimensionality affects the secular evolution of a neutron star. We focus on two important cases when the rotation axis of a neutron star behaves counter-intuitively: isolated deformed pulsar affected by two competing precession mechanisms and magnetic obliquity evolution in a binary system.
