Nowadays new columns for HILIC continue to appear based on various types of supports. In order to choose suitable column for particular analyses they should be properly characterized in terms of their abilities to provide specific solute-adsorbent interactions. Several HILIC selectivity tests serve for that purpose, in which special solute pairs are used. However, these tests were developed for silica-based HILIC stationary phases, and they are not fully applicable for mixed-mode polymer-based ones. Especially anion exchange selectivity parameter based on retention of hydrophobic anion and neutral compound was found to be overestimating for poly(styrene-divinylbenzene)-based (PS-DVB-based) stationary phases. Thus, in this work we provided thorough investigation on anion exchange properties for both silica- and polymer-based columns in HILIC mode using several approaches.
