The geographic information system (GIS) comprises geospatial data in both vector and raster formats. Vector information consists of all three geometric types: points, polylines and polygons. The attribute database includes more than 30 parameters such as types of channel processes, morphological types of channels, ice jams locations, types of delta, hydrological regime, channel and floodplains width, sediment composition, conditions of channel formation, etc. Raster format data include satellite images (SPOT 2, 4, 5; Radarsat-1, etc.) acquired through services of the Lomonosov Moscow State University Geoportal (the MSU Geoportal). Currently we are working on search and collection of the available information in non-digital form (such as hard-copy topographic maps or hydrological databases) and transferring it into vector files with attribute databases in the GIS environment. The GIS is designed in two versions: full desktop and web-based. The full desktop version is based on the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop. Web-version of the GIS is realized on a web-GIS service provided by the MSU Geoportal. By the end of 2014 we plan to propose methods of the GIS applications for protecting public safety from diverse negative effects of floods and other hydrological hazards.
