The synthesis and preliminary characterization of two new geminal azidonitro compounds of heterocyclic class, 5-azido-3-tertbutyl-5-nitrotetrahydro-2H-1,3-oxazine and 5-azido-3,5-dinitrotetrahydro-2H-1,3-oxazine (AZDNOX), is described. The first compound and its ,-dinitro analog, 3-tertbutyl-5,5-dinitrotetrahydro-2H-1,3-oxazine, have been obtained in good yields by the reactions of 5-nitrotetrahydro-2H-1,3-oxazine salts with azide and nitrite ions by the agency of potassium ferricyanide. Combustion behaviors of melt-castable explosives from 1,3-oxazine family, AZDNOX and 3,5,5-trinitrotetrahydro-2H-1,3-oxazine (TNOX), have been studied. Burning rate measurements have been performed in a constant-pressure bomb in the pressure range of 0.1-15 MPa. Temperature profiles in the combustion wave of AZDNOX and TNOX were measured using thin tungsten-rhenium thermocouples. Pressure dependence of the burning surface temperatures has been evaluated. Combustion peculiarities of both compounds are discussed.
