Personality hardiness is a system of attitudes toward yourself and the world that represents resilience under stress. It consists of three components: commitment (involvement in the activity), control (beliefs that your own efforts can change your life) and challenge (acceptance of risk). The study examined the relation between hardiness, personality traits and life satisfaction. Subjects of the study were the students (n=151) of two professional orientations, biology and physics. Students in two groups as well as men and women did not differ in the level of hardiness. In both groups hardiness was associated with activity, internal locus of control, Big Five Extraversion and Emotional stability. Life satisfaction was related with all components of hardiness (r = 0.582-0.642, p<0.001). As life satisfaction is partially based on success in getting over difficulties, the higher score of hardiness is associated with greater life satisfaction. The results had some differences depending on gender and professional orientation of students, for example, the relation of hardiness with tolerance of ambiguity and sensation seeking were found only in the group of students-physicists. The results confirm the idea of hardiness as a positive personal disposition.
