Radio signals of the global navigational satellite systems (e.g., GPS) are often scattered by the irregularities of the ionosphere and low atmosphere, including sporadic layers and so on. This in turn affects the normal functioning of these system themselves and various measurements based on registration of GPS signals, such as radio occultation technique for retrieval of the vertical atmospheric refractivity profiles. On the other hand, this allows for statement of the problem of the structure of these irregularities, based on the registration of the signal, scattered by these irregularities. In this work the scattering of the GPS signal by typical separate irregularities of the ionosphere and low atmosphere is simulated numerically. For the spherical irregularities with diameter up to 1 km, and density up to several per cent of the surrounding medium density, the exact solution of the scattering problem, based on the partial wave technique, is used. On the basis of exact solution of the scalar wave equation, for the kilometerscale irregularities the feasibility of retrieval of total electron content (TEC) within the object along the wave propagation direction is shown.
