The new development allows the control of optical protective marks to be automated using a control procedure that is invariant with respect to the position of the control device on the optical protective mark. The development is primarily a technology employed to certify the authenticity of products, and it can be used to efficiently protect bank notes, passports, documents, and excise stamps, as well as various consumer goods against counterfeiting. Optical protective marks incorporate fragments of a flat optical element with asymmetric microrelief, recorded by electron beam at precision of 10 nanometers. When illuminated by a laser, this optical element creates in the focal plane parallel to the plane of the protective mark a special asymmetric image. The new security feature itself is well-protected against imitations as it requires 10 nm accuracy of microrelief forming at the stage of synthesis of original of an optical element.
