Oligogermanes and related compounds containing element – element bond (E = Si, Ge, Sn) may be regarded as models for producing molecular wires. In fact, electrons of single Ge-Ge bond are delocalized across the entire backbone of these molecules. Therefore existence of σ-delocalization in oligogermanes results to appearance of properties similar to unsaturated hydrocarbons (conductivity, thermochromism, non-linear optical properties). Anyway investigation of the properties of these compounds depends on the length of the element chain, nature of the element, substituents and conformation. This report includes recent advances in this field performed in our laboratory
