Experimental studies of the normal glow discharge are conducted at the facility of IPMech RAS. High-tech experimental equipment allowed to register the current-voltage characteristics of a glow discharge in nitrogen, argon and helium. Experimentally obtained emission spectra along the column of the normal glow discharge are presented. The solutions of technological problems of experimental work and efforts to stabilize the pressure in the test chamber are described. The spatial characteristics of the discharge are measured as a function of current. The results are compared with the Engel-Steenbeck model.
