Silicon nanoparticles possess unique physical properties and they are non-toxic and biodegradable that opens up the possibility of their applications for simultaneous diagnosis and therapy (theranostics) of cancer. In our work silicon nanoparticles with sizes from 10 to 50 nm act as contrast agents for diagnostics by magnetic resonance imaging and as sensitizers of local hyperthermia of tumors under irradiation with therapeutic radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation. At the end of the treatment the nanoparticles are dissolved (biodegrading) with the release of non-toxic silicic acid derived naturally from the body. The use of biodegradable nanoparticles as theranostics agents will minimize the time between diagnosis and treatment and will avoid unwanted side effects of the commonly used procedures for the treatment of cancer. The proposed approach is promising for both the diagnosis and therapy of various cancers and it improves the accuracy of diagnosis of cancer in several times in comparison with existing methods in reducing the price of the diagnosis of cancer and its therapy by several times. Furthermore, this approach possesses the following advantages: 1) more accessible to the public treatment of a wide range of cancer; 2) will significantly expand the network of clinics that use the theranostic modalities and translation medicine technologies
