It is known that oppositely charged polyions with a high charge density of the chains are able to form water-soluble nonstoichiometric polyelectrolyte complexes (NPECs). One of the main properties of NPECs is the ability to participate in competitive interpolyelectrolyte exchange or substitution reactions with other polyions. Investigation of these model reactions allows to reveal general kinetic and thermodynamic factors responsible for the reconstruction and rearrangement of biologically important macromolecular structures.
