The ion-beam surface reduction of metal higher oxides (Mo, Nb, W, Ta) was studied in situ at the high-vacuum conditions by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was shown that the different kinds of lower oxides are formed in thin surface layers of higher oxides after the low-energy argon ion bombardment. It was found that also the metallization of upper very thin surface layers (1-2 nm) of higher oxides occurs.
